Technology

The Reactable core technology has been developed to meet the highly demanding requirements of real-time musical interaction, in which speed, robustness and reliability are even more important than in common industrial applications. Since our technology has proved to be more than stable enough for live on-stage performance as well as for permanent museum installations, we are now able to offer our technology to business clients, who are looking for a reliable platform for their own interactive tangible multi-touch applications. Reactable Systems is open to any type of collaboration with other businesses within the areas of dedicated hardware sales, project consulting, and even the full implementation of custom projects based on our platform.

Core Functionality

The Reactable hard- and software delivers a robust object and finger tracking platform for the creation of tangible multi-touch interactive surfaces. The platform is based on computer vision using high quality industrial cameras which can track numerous tagged objects and finger touches on the interactive table surface. This surface is made of a specially engineered acrylic material, where the visual feedback is displayed using a short-throw projector inside the table. The full system is completely self-contained and only needs a single external 110/220V power-supply.

Reactable Hardware

The present Reactable hardware consists of a round interactive surface with a diameter of 76cm. The full round table is about 90cm wide also with a height of 90cm.

The interactive surface technology is based on a camera-projector system and a specifically designed back projection screen.

reacTIVision Software

The core sensor component of the Reactable is the computer vision tracking software reacTIVision, which is capable of tracking a large number of tagged objects as well as multiple finger touches. We are offering this software together with our hardware or as a separate SDK for the rapid development of tangible multi-touch applications based on computer vision. This SDK includes the actual high performance sensor application as  well as a  series of example projects for various programming languages and environments that can serve as the starting point for custom projects.

TUIO Protocol & Framework

Reactable Systems is leading the development of the TUIO framework, which has become a de-facto standard for open source tangible multi-touch solutions. Since we released the TUIO protocol to the public domain, it has been adopted by a growing number of open-source projects and commercial initiatives. We are offering first-hand consulting and development services, as well as custom TUIO solutions to industry partners in addition to our SDK.

Licensing

Reactable Systems in one of the leading innovators within the growing multi-touch and tangible interface community. In addition to our own open source multi-touch marker tracking software reacTIVision, the TUIO protocol and our TUIO SDK are base for many other commercial, academic and hobbyist projects. Our company is strongly committed to the spirit of open source software and will continue to actively develop the tracking software, protocol and client implementations under the GPL license.

We also offer our software suite under an alternative license model for those clients who prefer to develop closed source projects based on our reacTIVision or TUIO suite. This offer includes an extended SDK, example projects and basic support for one development unit plus a flexible per-unit license model. Please get in touch with our software sales department for further details.
